Berk-Tek  issues LAN cabling standards update

The Communications Supply Corp. (CSC) blog has posted a link to Berk-Tek / Nexans' latest "Standards Watch: LAN Standardization Newsletter." The useful PDF technical document contains a brief summary of all the LAN cabling infrastructure standards projects that were in process in 2012, while providing insight into cabling standards that are in the works for 2013.

LAN applications standards covered in the document include: 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Ethernet over twisted-pair and copper cabling; 100 Gb/s Ethernet over multimode optical fiber cabling; and 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Ethernet over single-mode optical fiber cabling.

New cabling components standards covered include: next generation twisted-pair cabling standards in support of 40Gb/s Ethernet; OM4 multimode optical fiber cabling standard projects in support of 40 Gb/s (4X10G) Ethernet enhanced links; and OM4 or OM4+ multimode optical fiber cabling standard projects for supporting 25 Gb/s transmission.

Generic cabling systems standards covered include: the TIA-568 cabling standards, "D" series revision; a network security project, defining a scope and its relation to structured cabling; Cabling Automated Infrastructure Management (AIM) systems; and an update on the Sustainability Technology Environments Program (STEP).
